Similar to string insulators, suspension insulators are flexible assemblies composed of multiple porcelain or glass disc insulators, interconnected through metal fittings. These insulators are commonly employed in medium- and high-voltage transmission lines for reliable electrical insulation and mechanical support.
FERR’s Suspension Insulators are specifically engineered for high-voltage applications, where robust mechanical strength and environmental resistance are essential. The product line includes porcelain disc-type options as well as polymer long-rod models to suit varying needs.
Suspension insulators come in two main designs: the cap-and-pin type and the interlink type, also known as the Hewlett type. These designs feature distinct metallic connection methods to ensure optimal performance and stability.
For installation on pole lines, the conductor is typically suspended from the bottom section of the insulator. Cross-arms are used to secure the insulator firmly to poles or towers, providing stability during operation.
The voltage capacity of a suspension insulator is determined by the number of disc plates in its assembly; adding more plates increases its voltage withstand capability.
A variety of end fittings can be used with suspension insulators, such as Y-clevis, tongue, clevis, socket, ball, and eye fittings, allowing seamless integration with different transmission configurations.
One key distinction between suspension and string insulators lies in their orientation and application. Suspension insulators are positioned vertically to counteract gravitational forces, while string insulators are mounted horizontally to bear the conductor’s tensile load.
