Corona Ring

A corona ring, also known as an anti-corona ring, is a toroid-shaped metal component designed to attach to the terminals of high-voltage equipment. For systems operating at voltages of 230kV and above, incorporating a corona ring becomes essential. Its primary function is to minimize corona discharge, which frequently occurs in high-voltage power lines.

FERR Corona Rings are specifically crafted for use with insulators and bushings to lower electrical stress and mitigate corona discharge at elevated voltages. These rings are manufactured with precision using materials such as aluminum or galvanized steel.

Typically made from copper, steel, or aluminum, the corona ring is securely packed in wooden cases and cartons for transportation. The occurrence of corona discharge is linked to localized excessive electric field gradients, as the diameter of the ring inversely affects the voltage stress on the lowermost insulators.

In high-power discharge systems, corona rings are effective in curbing corona discharge, which can otherwise damage insulators and lead to harmful breakdown byproducts. By redirecting current flow from wire-to-ring instead of wire-to-air, these rings play a crucial role in suppressing corona discharge and maintaining system reliability.
